Winter Storm Fern Brings Chaos to LaGuardia Airport
LaGuardia Airport, one of the main airports in New York City, has been nearly abandoned due to the catastrophic Winter Storm Fern. The Federal Aviation Administration reported that thousands of flights have been canceled due to heavy snow, high winds, and low clouds.
The usually hectic airport has been left nearly empty, with images showing the check-in counters of Delta Air Lines and the TSA security entrance completely devoid of activity. Maintenance crews have been working tirelessly to clear snow from the taxiway, but the powerful storm has caused significant travel disruptions for holidaymakers, business travelers, and other passengers.
The Port Authority, which oversees LaGuardia Airport, has been coordinating with airlines and terminal operators to keep the airport operating safely and efficiently. However, they have warned that weather-related problems are expected to continue into the next day.
The massive winter storm, stretching from New Mexico to New England, has also caused chaos in other parts of the country. The death toll has risen to 18 across eight states, with nearly 270 million Americans under alert for dangerously cold temperatures. Over 20,000 flights have been canceled since Friday, and over 800,000 customers are still without power.
American Airlines has been the hardest hit, with the largest share of disruptions, including 644 flights canceled and 272 delayed. Other major carriers like Republic Airways, JetBlue Airways, and Delta Air Lines have also been canceling flights.
The FAA has warned of further disruptions, with snow, high winds, and low clouds expected to delay flights in cities like Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. They also advised passengers to check their flight status with their airline as cleanup continues from the weekend’s winter storm.
In addition to the travel disruptions, Winter Storm Fern has also claimed lives and caused property damage. A private business jet crashed in a snowstorm in Bangor, Maine, killing seven people and leaving one crew member with serious injuries. There have also been reports of strange steamnadoes, adding to the chaos caused by the storm.
As the storm continues to wreak havoc, officials are urging people to stay safe and avoid unnecessary travel. With temperatures expected to plummet in the coming days, it is important to follow safety precautions and stay informed about any changes to flight schedules.
