Delta Flight Diverted from Columbia Metropolitan Airport Due to Government Shutdown

Over the weekend, a Delta Air Lines flight from Columbia Metropolitan Airport to New York City’s LaGuardia Airport was diverted back to Columbia. The flight, DL5089, was operated by regional carrier Endeavor Air and departed from the gate at 7:30 p. m. on November 9th. According to flight-tracking websites, the flight circled east of Richmond, Virginia before returning to Columbia around midnight.

The airport’s vice president of marketing and air service development, Kim Crafton, confirmed that the diversion was due to the federal government shutdown. She explained that the shutdown prompted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to order airlines to cut flight schedules at dozens of major airports, resulting in the cancelation of multiple flights.

Cayce-based meteorologist Chris Jackson also shared the news on social media, calling the situation a “dumpster fire. ” He expressed empathy for flight attendants who have had to deal with the effects of the shutdown. The post received hundreds of reactions from followers.

Crafton clarified that Columbia Metropolitan Airport has not received direct orders from the FAA to cut flights. However, three departures to Charlotte, Washington D. C. , and Atlanta were canceled soon after the directive was issued. On November 10th, two more Delta flights, one to LaGuardia and one to Atlanta, were also canceled.

Crafton emphasized that these cancelations have a direct impact on the airport’s daily seat capacity and passenger count. She stated, “We want to see as many individuals fly through this airport and when a flight is cancelled – it does impact our passenger traffic numbers. ” Crafton also noted that cancelations are made by the airlines, not the airport. However, the airport strives to do everything in their control to remedy any situation and keep their loyal passengers informed.

To help travelers stay informed, the airport encourages them to check their flight status and turn on airline app alerts for updates. Crafton explained that the airport’s team closely monitors the aviation industry and any situations that may impact the airport and its passengers. They reacted swiftly and provided accurate information and updates as needed. Additionally, they joined discussion groups of peer airports to stay informed of any updates and changes.

Crafton reassured that the airport will continue to operate in this manner in the future. They are committed to keeping their passengers informed and providing the best travel experience possible, even in challenging situations like the government shutdown.
