American Airlines to Resume Flights to Venezuela in April

After more than seven years, American Airlines will be the first U. S. airline to resume flights to Venezuela since the government ordered the suspension of all commercial passenger and cargo flights between the two countries in 2019. The airline has announced that it will resume service on April 30, with daily flights between Miami and Caracas.

American Airlines’ Return to Venezuela

In a press release, American Airlines announced April 30 as the potential date for resuming service between the U. S. and Venezuela. This decision follows the lifting of a 2019 order by the U. S. Department of Transportation, granting American Airlines preliminary approval. The airline has expressed its gratitude for the efforts of U. S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, U. S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and the entire administration in helping them reconnect the U. S. with Venezuela.

However, the timeline is subject to change and must still receive final regulatory approvals and security assessments from both the U. S. and Venezuelan governments. American Airlines hopes to operate the daily service from Miami Airport to Caracas using Embraer 175 aircraft, offering both first-class and economy cabins.

Challenges Ahead

Despite preliminary approvals, there are still critical hurdles that must be overcome before the April 30 launch can be confirmed. These include final regulatory clearances from both governments, a final “go-ahead” from Venezuela’s regulatory body, and TSA’s final safety assessment of Caracas airport protocols. The airline must also navigate visa processing backlogs and ensure that their operations meet FAA standards after seven years of neglect. Additionally, FAA route clearance is required due to regional military readiness and GPS interference.

American Airlines also plans to serve Maracaibo, but a launch timeline has not yet been announced.

A History of Connecting Venezuela to the U. S.

American Airlines has a long history of connecting Venezuela to the U. S, with their first flight between San Juan, Puerto Rico and Caracas in 1987. Over the next 30 years, the airline expanded its presence in Venezuela, offering flights from Miami, Dallas/Fort Worth, New York, and even Fort Lauderdale. At its peak, the airline operated up to five daily flights between Miami and Caracas.

American Airlines’ Chief Commercial Officer, Nat Pieper, highlighted the airline’s commitment to Venezuela, stating that their Miami hub is the preeminent U. S. gateway to Latin America and that their service to Venezuela is a key part of their history and future.

The Collapse of U. S.

The collapse of air service between the U. S. and Venezuela was not immediate. United Airlines withdrew in 2017, followed by Delta Air Lines later that year, due to civil unrest and safety concerns in the country. American Airlines remained the last U. S. airline operating until March 2019 when it suspended flights from Miami to Caracas and Maracaibo amid diplomatic tensions and safety concerns. This led to the U. S.
