The Albany International Airport, located in the state of New York, has recently unveiled new enhancements for travelers and families to experience the beauty and culture of the Adirondack region. These additions include a children’s play area called the Adirondack Imaginarium, a mural, and a sculpture.

The Adirondack Imaginarium, spanning 1,300 square feet, was created in collaboration with local organizations such as The Wild Center museum, the Six Nations Iroquois Cultural Center, and artist Gracelee Lawrence. It offers a welcoming space for families to engage in hands-on play, art, and education, showcasing the natural and cultural wonders of the Adirondacks. Some highlights include a recreation of popular exhibits from The Wild Center, an interactive game about the life of a bald eagle, and a panoramic photograph of the Raquette River Oxbow. Additionally, a vibrant mural by Mohawk artist David Kanietakeron Fadden and a modern sculpture by University at Albany Professor Gracelee Lawrence add an artistic touch to the space.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her excitement about these new additions, stating that they demonstrate the collective commitment to creating world-class facilities that reflect the innovation and progress of the state. Stephanie Ratcliffe, Executive Director of The Wild Center, also shared her pride in contributing to the Adirondack Imaginarium and how it aligns with the museum’s mission to provide opportunities for exploration and inclusivity.

The airport’s Exhibits and Programs Director, Kathy Greenwood, emphasized the importance of creating a sense of place for travelers, highlighting the unique collaboration with regional organizations to bring the stories and spirit of the Adirondacks to life. State Senator Patricia Fahy also commended the airport’s efforts in modernizing and upgrading its facilities, making it more welcoming and inclusive for all travelers, including those with disabilities.
