A Traveller’s Christmas Nightmare with Alaska Airlines

A recent video posted on TikTok shows a heated exchange between a woman, later identified as Alexandra Compton of Portland, Oregon, and Alaska Airlines staff. The incident, which has gone viral on social media, occurred when Compton attempted to fly home for Christmas with her two cats. According to the video, the airline refused to let her cats fly with her, causing her to miss her flight and potentially spending Christmas alone.

The Argument

In the video, Compton can be heard demanding to see the airline’s pet policy, claiming that she was not aware of any weight restrictions for her cats. She also claimed that the information was not on the airline’s website. However, the airline staff showed her the policy, explaining that her cats needed to travel separately in larger carriers for their safety and comfort. The argument escalated when Compton was informed that she had not even booked her cats on the flight, as she claimed to have done so in the past without any issues.

The Policy

According to the airline’s website, pet fees start at $100 and can go up to $200, depending on the type of travel and destination. The policy also states that up to two pets of the same species and similar size can travel in the same carrier, as long as they are not in distress and no body parts protrude from the carrier. However, the airline staff stood by their policy and stated that Compton could not decide the company’s policy.

The Resolution

Compton ended up purchasing a second carrier and taking a later flight with both cats, according to her Facebook post. She expressed her frustration with the airline and their policies and wished them coal for Christmas. The airline has not yet commented on the incident.

Lessons Learned

This incident serves as a reminder for travellers to carefully read and understand airline policies, especially when travelling with pets. It is also important to book all necessary arrangements, such as pet fees, in advance to avoid any last-minute issues. And while it is understandable to get upset when plans go awry, it is important to remain respectful and calm when dealing with airline staff to find a resolution.
