Loganair, a Scottish regional airline, has announced that it will be ending its operations at Dundee Airport. The decision was confirmed this week, with the airline stating that it will no longer be offering flights between Dundee and London Heathrow starting October 23rd. This also means the closure of their operating base at the small airport, resulting in the discontinuation of onward connections to the Shetland Islands and Orkney.
The BBC reported that Loganair has attributed this move to the financial unsustainability of the Dundee-London route. Currently, the route is supported by local, Scottish, and U. K. governments as a public obligation route, similar to the Essential Air Service in the United States. However, the airline has deemed it no longer viable to continue operating at the airport.
In light of this development, Loganair has assured that they will assist their employees at the Dundee base in finding alternative job opportunities. The extent of any permanent layoffs within the airline is yet to be determined.
With Loganair’s departure, Dundee Airport will no longer have any scheduled commercial air service. The airline has been serving the airport since 2008, connecting it to various destinations within the U. K. as well as international destinations such as France, Ireland, Denmark, and Norway.
Loganair mainly operates within the U. K. , connecting Scottish destinations to England and several small islands to the British mainland. Despite this setback, the airline will continue to serve its other destinations and maintain its operations at other airports.
