Alaska Airlines is making significant developments to enhance their maintenance capabilities at one of their main hubs in the Pacific Northwest. The airline recently celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for a brand new $135 million maintenance hangar at Portland International Airport in Oregon.

Pending approval of permits, the construction will take place next to Alaska’s current Horizon Air operations and maintenance center. This new facility will provide 125,000 square feet of indoor space for aircraft work and 60,000 square feet for offices, engine, machine, and sheet metal shops, as well as support areas.

Officials have stated that the hangar will cater to both Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines’ mainline fleets. The addition of this hangar will allow technicians to work on up to three narrowbody aircraft or two widebody aircraft simultaneously, resulting in faster turnaround times. It will also ease the workload on Alaska’s existing maintenance facilities in Seattle and other hubs.

A visual representation of the planned hangar at Portland was also released by Alaska Airlines. According to Benjamin Brookman, the Vice President of Real Estate and Airport Affairs at Alaska Airlines, this new maintenance facility is not only an investment in one of their critical hubs but also a key that will unlock growth opportunities throughout their network. He further added that with the increased flexibility in maintenance locations and the types of aircraft they can service, they can operate their flights more efficiently.

The construction is estimated to be completed by the second quarter of 2028. This new maintenance hangar will not only benefit Alaska Airlines but also contribute to the growth and development of Portland International Airport. As the airline continues to expand its operations, this facility will play a crucial role in maintaining their fleet and providing efficient services to their passengers.
