American Airlines Experiences Canceled Flights at Orlando International Airport Due to Winter Storm
Orlando, Fla. – On Tuesday, flight-tracking company FlightAware reported that American Airlines had suffered from a high number of canceled flights at Orlando International Airport, with a total of 60 flights being canceled, representing approximately 56% of their flights. In addition, 32 flights were delayed.
The airline was contacted for further information and directed to a release regarding the impacts of cold weather. According to the release, American Airlines is working tirelessly to restore operations after significant impacts caused by Winter Storm Fern. The release also states that the airline is doing everything possible to minimize cancellations, as they understand the inconvenience it causes for customers and team members.
This winter storm has not only affected American Airlines, but also five of their nine hub airports, including Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport (DFW). The constantly changing weather conditions at these airports, with a total of 10 different unique weather conditions and 23 changes in weather throughout a single day at DFW, have made it extremely challenging to operate.
However, American Airlines is not the only airline facing difficulties due to the winter storm. FlightAware’s numbers on Tuesday evening showed that other major airlines also experienced a high number of delays, with JetBlue having 9 cancellations and 32 delays, Delta Air Lines with 6 cancellations and 24 delays, Southwest with 1 cancellation and 81 delays, Spirit with 1 cancellation and 11 delays, and United with 1 cancellation and 11 delays.
As of 11 p. m. , FlightAware reported over 40 cancellations and nearly 130 delays for flights departing from MCO. Popular destinations such as Dallas, Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York City also experienced significant delays and cancellations.
While this may seem like a high number of disruptions, it is actually an improvement from the previous weekend when over 400 flights were canceled in just one day at Orlando International Airport due to the winter storm.
