A private jet crashed shortly after taking off from Bangor International Airport in Maine on Sunday evening, according to the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The jet was carrying six people, all of whom were killed in the crash.
Reports initially stated that seven people were on board, but the airport later confirmed that there were only six passengers. The FAA has deferred to the airport for the accurate count.
The incident occurred during a snowstorm, which had caused widespread disruptions to transportation and electricity in the Southeast. The airport has since been shut down and emergency personnel are working at the scene.
Disturbing audio obtained by CNN reveals concerns about limited visibility from pilots and air traffic controllers before takeoff. In the recording, a controller gives clearance for departure, but moments later urgently announces that all traffic on the field must stop. Another controller is heard saying, “Aircraft upside down. We have a passenger aircraft upside down.
The airport has set up an Emergency Operations Center and is urging people to stay away from the location. Travelers are advised to contact their airlines for updates on their flights.
Data from FlightAware showed that approximately 12,000 flights were cancelled and almost 20,000 experienced delays due to the winter storm. Major airports in Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, North Carolina, New York, and New Jersey were affected.
The crash is currently under investigation by airport authorities. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of flying during severe weather conditions and the importance of following safety protocols in the aviation industry. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident.
