Direct Flight from Owensboro to Charlotte Now Available
The long-awaited direct flight from Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport to Charlotte, North Carolina is set to begin on February 26th. This new service, provided by Contour Airlines, has generated excitement both inside and outside the terminal. Airport Director Tristan Durbin shared his enthusiasm for the new route, stating that it opens up a completely different market than the previous flight to Chicago.
The flights to Charlotte will operate five days a week, with the exception of Tuesdays and Saturdays, providing travelers with expanded connectivity to the eastern United States and international destinations such as the Caribbean. Durbin noted that Charlotte is a popular hub for connecting flights to cities like New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Florida. This new route will benefit both business and leisure travelers.
While specific ticket sales data is not yet available, Durbin expressed optimism as Contour Airlines officials have reported positive advanced bookings and a strong market outlook. This confidence is reflected in their decision to offer this new service without any additional subsidies from the Essential Air Service (EAS) program.
Durbin also confirmed that changes to the Chicago schedule, previously announced, will remain in place. The airport will now offer one daily flight to Chicago instead of two, in order to accommodate the five daily flights to Charlotte.
The airport is currently in the process of renewing its EAS contract, which governs federally subsidized air service to the region. Bids from interested airlines are due to the U. S. Department of Transportation (DOT) by February 4th. Durbin stated that there have been meetings with multiple air carriers and he expects the bidding process to be competitive, which is a positive development for the community.
Once proposals are submitted, the DOT will review and make recommendations before awarding a new contract. The current agreement with Contour runs through July, meaning no changes to service are expected until then.
Durbin highlighted the strength of Owensboro’s market for daily jet service, which was never available before Contour’s arrival. He stated that the airport has grown to a point where it can sustain this level of service, which is a positive development.
While there are no major construction projects currently underway, Durbin mentioned that several infrastructure updates are in the works. In the meantime, the focus remains on the success of the new Charlotte route and maintaining consistent performance in Chicago.
Overall, Durbin expressed excitement for the future of Owensboro’s airport and its potential for continued growth and success.
