Delta Air Lines has faced a series of challenges in December, starting with a major network outage at Detroit Metro Airport that caused delays and cancellations. The airline has also been affected by severe winter weather, resulting in disruptions and cancellations at its New York hubs.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has advised passengers to rearrange their travel plans due to an expected snowfall of 5 to 7 inches in southeast New York on Friday. This could be the most snowfall in the area since January 2022. With Boxing Day being one of the busiest travel days of the year, airports are taking precautions and announcing cancellations and delays.
John F. Kennedy International Airport currently has the most cancellations for both departing and arriving flights, with 124 and 173 respectively. Newark Liberty Airport has 147 cancellations and LaGuardia has 79 cancellations on arriving flights. Delta Air Lines, which has the most flights at these airports, has already confirmed over 150 cancellations and issued a ticket advisory for affected passengers.
In response to the winter weather conditions, Delta Air Lines has issued a travel advisory for affected cities, including New York, Newark, and Philadelphia. Passengers are advised to check flight status frequently and rebook their travel by December 30. Delta has already canceled several flights for Friday and the number is expected to increase throughout the day and into the weekend.
As of early Friday morning, Delta Air Lines has the most flight cancellations worldwide at 159. Other major U. S. airlines, such as United and American, have significantly fewer cancellations. Delta also had the most cancellations on Christmas Day, with 48, second only to Japan Air Commuter.
