American Airlines made history on December 18, 2025, by launching the first commercial flight of the new Airbus A321XLR. This marked the first time a US carrier has operated this long-range aircraft.

The inaugural flight departed from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) at 11:00 ET, carrying over 150 passengers to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The A321XLR offers American’s Flagship Suite, Premium Economy, and main cabin (Economy) seating options. Passengers on the first flight were given special commemorative gift bags to celebrate the occasion.

In a message to passengers, Heather Garboden, American’s chief customer officer, said, “Every aspect of this aircraft, from its premium design details to Bluetooth connectivity and enhanced entertainment, has been carefully crafted to ensure a comfortable transcontinental travel experience.

Initially, the A321XLR will operate on domestic routes before expanding to international destinations. On March 8, 2026, American will launch a new service between JFK and Edinburgh, Scotland.

The airline also announced 15 new routes for 2026, strengthening its domestic network. This includes adding Lincoln, Nebraska as its 240th US destination on June 4, 2026, making American the airline with the most domestic destinations.

Chicago O’Hare Airport (ORD) will see a significant increase in service, with American planning to operate over 500 daily departures next summer. New routes from the hub will include flights to Erie, Pennsylvania; Lincoln, Nebraska; and Tri-Cities, Tennessee. The airline will also extend its winter-only service to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Key West, Florida, into the summer season.

Brian Znotins, American’s senior vice president of network and schedule planning, stated, “We are proud to offer unrivaled connectivity across the United States. With new routes to cities like Lincoln, Nebraska; Abilene, Texas; and Columbia, Missouri, we are providing local residents with one-stop access to conduct business, take a dream vacation, or attend major sporting events.

The Phoenix hub will also see an increase in service with the addition of seven new routes, including flights to Bozeman and Kalispell, Montana, and Rapid City, South Dakota, providing better access to national parks and monuments in the western United States.

With the launch of the A321XLR and the expansion of its domestic network, American Airlines remains committed to providing its customers with a comfortable and convenient travel experience both domestically and internationally.
