Eagle County Regional Airport Experiencing Record-Breaking Year
The Eagle County Regional Airport, located in Colorado, is expected to have its best year ever with a projected increase in enplanements and continued growth in the winter season. David Reid, the airport’s director of aviation, reported to the Eagle County Board of Commissioners that there has been a significant rise in demand for flights, resulting in the need for further development and improvements at the airport.
What is Driving the Growth?
At the end of 2024, the airport set a goal to increase enplanements by 10% in 2025 compared to the average of the past three years. As of October, enplanements have already increased by over 33% compared to the three-year average and 12. 5% compared to 2024. With November numbers yet to be confirmed, it is expected that the trend will continue. The growth is evident in the number of passengers passing through the airport’s TSA checkpoint, with a strong indication of a record year for the airport.
According to Josh Miller, the airport’s deputy director of aviation, Thanksgiving weekend saw a significant increase in passenger numbers, potentially surpassing last year’s record. The growth is expected to continue, although the airport recognizes that there is a limit due to the one runway and seven gates the airport currently has.
Strategic Priorities for Year-Round, Affordable Air Service
One of the airport’s strategic priorities is to provide year-round, affordable air service for locals. In pursuit of this goal, the airport has increased the number of commercial flights during the offseason from three to four per day in summer 2023 to nine per day this year. This has led to a 24% increase in enplanements from April to June and a 20% increase from July to September compared to the three-year average. The airport offers direct flights to Denver, Dallas, Chicago, and Houston year-round.
United Airlines has also upgraded its planes, increasing seat capacity by 30% to 40%, indicating a significant investment in the market. This locals-friendly approach has been successful, with Miller stating that he rarely boards a flight without knowing at least a dozen people onboard.
What to Expect for Winter 2025-26
The airport’s winter flight schedule will begin on December 15, with a projected 30+ commercial flights per day. This winter, the airport will see new nonstop service on Delta to New York City and Minneapolis, Minnesota, on United Airlines to Washington, D. C. , and on American Airlines to Charlotte, North Carolina. Charlotte is a popular connecting point to Latin America and international destinations.
The airport will be hosting gate celebrations for the new flights, with a significant increase in flights expected on Saturday, December 20. Alaska Airlines has also added a fourth day of service to San Diego due to the success of its initial year of service in winter 2024-25.
