Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the New York mayoral election and allegations of vote fraud against Rahul Gandhi in Haryana were the top stories on November 5. However, there were also significant developments in politics, business, technology, sports, and entertainment. Here’s a recap of the day’s news with Express Catch-up.

Indian Heaven Premier League, a private cricket league in Srinagar, faced backlash mid-season as players and hotels accused the organisers of not paying their dues. The league, organised by Yuva Society Mohali, featured well-known players like Chris Gayle and Jesse Ryder. However, it came to an abrupt halt on November 2 when some players protested over non-payment of dues. The players were also stopped from leaving the hotel due to uncleared bills worth Rs 51 lakh.

In Mumbai, a special court granted permission to Ketan Parekh, accused in the 2001 stock market manipulation scam, to travel to the UAE to attend a wedding and go on a family vacation. However, the court directed him to first deposit Rs 27. 06 crore with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). In September, his request to travel to multiple countries over four months was rejected by the court.

A UPS plane crashed during takeoff from Louisville airport in Kentucky, killing seven people and injuring 11 others. The plane, bound for Honolulu, crashed shortly after 5 pm local time. UPS confirmed that three crew members were on board. Meanwhile, Democrat Mikie Sherrill was elected governor of New Jersey, defeating Jack Ciattarelli, who had been endorsed by former US President Donald Trump. This marks the third consecutive gubernatorial win for the Democratic Party in New Jersey.

In Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath handed over allotment letters of flats to 72 Economically Weaker Section (EWS) families in Lucknow. These flats were built on land that was seized from late mafia-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari and his family in the plush Dalibagh locality. The government had demolished buildings owned by Ansari’s family in 2020, claiming that they had illegally grabbed the land. CM Adityanath stated that this event was not just about distributing houses, but also a message that land seized from the mafia will now become homes for the poor.

That concludes our Express Catch-up for November 5. Stay tuned for more updates on the latest news from around the world.
