American Airlines Increases Transatlantic Capacity from Edinburgh Airport

In Summer 2026, American Airlines will be expanding its transatlantic capacity from Edinburgh Airport by resuming its Edinburgh – New York JFK service and extending its Philadelphia service. This move comes in response to strong demand for direct transatlantic connectivity from Scotland.

Resumed Route and Extended Season

Starting from March 8, 2026 until October 24, 2026, American Airlines will operate a daily service between Edinburgh and New York JFK using the 155-seat Airbus A321XLR aircraft. This route was previously suspended but is now being reinstated to cater to the growing demand for transatlantic travel.

In addition, the Philadelphia service will see an extended operating season from March 28, 2026 to October 24, 2026. This will allow travelers to have more options when planning their trips to the US.

Benefits for Travelers and the Travel Trade

The expanded program by American Airlines provides travelers with direct access to the airline’s wider domestic network through onward connections at JFK and Philadelphia. This makes it easier for both business and leisure travelers to reach various destinations across the USA.

For the travel trade, this growth in American Airlines’ presence at Edinburgh Airport is a positive sign as it supports the continued demand for direct transatlantic connectivity from Scotland. The increased schedule also opens up more opportunities for the travel trade to offer their clients a wider range of options for transatlantic travel.

Excitement from Airport CEO and Airline VP

Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport, expressed his excitement about American Airlines’ growth at Scotland’s busiest airport. He believes that the addition of the new route and extended season will not only strengthen the existing schedule but also make it easier for travelers to reach their desired destinations in the US.

José A. Freig, Vice President International and Inflight Dining Operations at American Airlines, also shared his excitement about the expansion. He mentioned the overwhelming positive feedback received from customers when the airline returned to Edinburgh earlier this year. Freig also highlighted the opportunity for customers to experience the new A321XLR aircraft for the first time across the Atlantic.

Flight Details

The EDI-JFK route will operate daily from 1030-1230 using the Airbus A321XLR aircraft. The return flight, JFK-EDI, will operate from 2100-0830. The EDI-PHL route will operate from March 28, 2026 to October 24, 2026.

Conclusion

The expansion of American Airlines’ transatlantic capacity from Edinburgh Airport in Summer 2026 is a testament to the growing demand for direct connectivity between Scotland and the US. With the resumed Edinburgh – New York JFK route and extended Philadelphia service, travelers can look forward to more options and easier access to the airline’s extensive domestic network.
