Airport Security Lines Feature New Message Amid Government Shutdown
As travelers navigate through airport security, they may encounter a new message on television screens: Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem addressing the ongoing government shutdown. This video has caused controversy and has already been declined by several airports.
The video, expected to be shown in over 5,000 commercial airports, features Noem warning travelers about possible delays as TSA officers are working without pay. She also takes the opportunity to blame Democrats for the government closure, as reported by Fox News.
According to the video, Noem states, “However, Democrats in Congress refuse to fund the federal government. And because of this, many of our operations are impacted and most of our TSA employees are working without pay. We will continue to do all that we can to avoid delays that will impact your travel. And our hope is that Democrats will soon recognize the importance of opening the government.
The Senate has failed multiple times to pass a spending bill, as both Democrats and Republicans push for their own legislation to be signed by President Donald Trump. In order for a spending bill to pass in the Senate, it must receive at least 60 votes in favor.
Concerns About Ethics
Noem’s video has raised concerns about possible violations of the Hatch Act, which prohibits federal employees from engaging in partisan political activities. The Port of Portland, which operates the Portland International Airport in Oregon, has decided not to show the video, stating it could violate state and federal laws on politicking.
Molly Prescott, spokesperson for the Port of Portland, told Oregon Live, “We did not consent to playing the video in its current form, as we believe the Hatch Act clearly prohibits use of public assets for political purposes and messaging. Additionally, Oregon law states no public employee can promote or oppose any political committee, party, or affiliation.
This is not the first time the Trump administration has been accused of violating the Hatch Act. In the first week of the shutdown, employees reported that their out-of-office email messages were changed without their knowledge, blaming Democrats for the shutdown.
Other Airports Refuse to Show Video
The Portland airport is not alone in their decision not to show Noem’s video. According to The Washington Post, airports in Arizona and New York have also declined to air the video.
Airport security videos from the secretary are not uncommon, as they often provide reminders and updates on security procedures. However, in this case, the message has been deemed inappropriate, unacceptable, and inconsistent with the expectations of our nation’s leaders.
Ken Jenkins, Westchester County Executive, released a statement stating, “At a time when we should be focused on ensuring stability, collaboration, and preparedness, this type of messaging only distracts from the real issues, and undermines public trust. As County Executive, I believe our residents deserve clear, honest, and nonpartisan communication – especially when it comes to national security, government shutdown impacts, and public safety.
