Joby Aviation, a leading electric air taxi company, recently announced its plans to launch a service in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2026. As a result, the company’s stock has soared by 12%.
The company has delivered its first aircraft to the UAE and has successfully completed piloted flight tests in preparation for its launch in the region. Founder and CEO JoeBen Bevirt expressed his excitement about the milestone, stating that this is a significant step towards integrating air taxi services into daily life globally. He also referred to the UAE as a “launchpad for a global revolution” in transportation.
Joby Aviation initially announced its plans to launch in the UAE in February 2024, as part of an agreement with Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority. This agreement grants the company exclusive rights to conduct air taxi services in Dubai for six years. Other expansion moves in the Middle East include building a vertiport at Dubai International Airport and announcing air taxi agreements with three Abu Dhabi government departments.
The company’s stock received a boost earlier in June when Saudi Arabian firm Abdul Latif Jameel announced a $1 billion investment for up to 300 electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircrafts. This investment was made as part of Joby’s Series C funding round. With these developments, Joby’s market capitalization has exceeded $9 billion, and its shares have surged by over 32% this year.
The increasing demand for air taxis, which operate like helicopters, has gained momentum in recent years. While there are regulatory and safety hurdles to overcome, the service has been praised for its potential to reduce traffic congestion and emissions. In fact, President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order that includes a pilot program for testing electric air taxis.
Overall, Joby Aviation’s progress in the UAE and the Middle East marks a significant step towards the future of transportation. With its innovative technology and expanding partnerships, the company is poised to revolutionize how people move around the world.
