United Airlines Increases Checked Bag Fees Due to Rising Fuel Costs

Beginning on Friday, United Airlines customers will see an increase in fees for checking luggage as the airline responds to the rising costs of jet fuel caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Passengers traveling within the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Latin America will now be charged $45 for their first checked bag and $55 for their second, according to a statement released by United.

This is the first time in two years that United has raised their baggage fees, reflecting the significant impact of the war in the Middle East on global oil supplies. JetBlue also announced a fee increase earlier this week, with some fees rising by up to $9 during peak travel periods. Both airlines cite the rising cost of jet fuel as the primary reason for the fee hikes.

However, some United customers will still be able to check their first bag for free. This includes co-branded credit card holders, certain loyalty-tier members, active military personnel, and travelers in premium cabins. Those who check their bags less than 24 hours before departure will incur an additional $5 fee, regardless of their status.

The rise in fuel prices has had a significant impact on airlines, with some CEOs reporting that it has already added hundreds of millions of dollars to their operating costs.
