Flight Delays and TSA Funding Crisis Cause Headaches for Air Travelers
Amidst the recent tragic plane crash at LaGuardia Airport and the ongoing Transportation Security Administration (TSA) funding crisis, air travel has become increasingly stressful for travelers. With long lines, disrupted flights, and stressed-out fliers, airports across the country are feeling the impact.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop for all planes at LaGuardia Airport in New York City after a deadly crash on Sunday evening involving a fire truck and a plane. This incident resulted in the death of two pilots and left many others injured. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford expressed his condolences to the families of the pilots and confirmed that a thorough investigation will be conducted.
Meanwhile, the TSA continues to work without pay as negotiations in Washington remain at a standstill. While many airports in upstate New York are not directly impacted, major hub airports outside of upstate that many New Yorkers fly to and from are experiencing delays and cancellations.
At Frederick Douglas Greater Rochester International Airport, director Andy Moore assures the public that they are prepared for these types of situations. However, the airport has already experienced two canceled departures to LaGuardia due to the current TSA frenzy.
Frequent traveler, Carlson, who has been using Rochester Airport for 35 years, recommends traveling during midday to avoid busy mornings. He also praises Rochester Airport for being a great onramp into the airport system.
In the midst of the TSA crisis, the Trump administration is considering deploying Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to airports if an agreement is not reached to fund the Department of Homeland Security. While many upstate airports have stated that they will not have ICE agents involved in operations, busier locations like JFK and Newark will have them.
According to Carlson, as long as the role of ICE agents is limited to TSA substitution and does not involve additional enforcement, it can be a constructive use of government workers. However, he expresses concerns about the potential for police actions that have been a part of their history.
The TSA backups have caused headaches for travelers, but Rochester International Airport is one of the 20 facilities across the country that is in a unique situation. They are part of the TSA Screening Partnership Program, where a private security company, contracted through TSA, handles security screenings. This program has helped the airport avoid long wait times, with the longest being only 12 minutes.
As a reminder, for those traveling to cities with large TSA backups, it is important to arrive early and be prepared. Travelers should also keep an eye on their flight status through their airport’s website. With spring break approaching, Thursday is expected to be an extremely busy day at Rochester International Airport.
