Boeing Secures Record Deal with Qatar Airways for 160 Widebody Planes
In a major deal for the aviation industry, Boeing has secured an order from Qatar Airways for 160 widebody planes with an option to purchase an additional 50. The deal, which was announced during President Donald Trump’s visit to Qatar, is worth a staggering $96 billion and is seen as a win for the US president.
The planes included in the deal are Boeing 777X and 787 models, equipped with GE Aerospace engines. This is a significant boost for Boeing and GE, as their rival Airbus has faced maintenance issues with their A350 planes, which are powered by Rolls-Royce engines.
According to Boeing, the order includes 130 787s and 30 777Xs, with an option for 50 more of these long-haul planes. The company’s stocks saw a slight increase following the announcement, with GE Aerospace also experiencing a rise in their stock value.
It is worth noting that for the 787s, Qatar Airways has chosen GE Aerospace’s GEnx engines over Rolls-Royce’s Trent 1000. The GE9X engine is the only option available for the 777X.
CEO of GE Aerospace, Larry Culp, stated that this deal for 400 GE engines is the largest in the company’s history. This was further emphasized by Qatar Airways CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, who had previously hinted at a significant order for widebody planes
