The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has officially begun construction on the new AirTrain Newark, a $3. 5 billion project that will replace the current outdated system at Newark Liberty International Airport. The groundbreaking ceremony, held on October 7th, was attended by government leaders, Port Authority officials, and key stakeholders.
The new 2. 5-mile automated people mover is expected to be operational by 2030 and will have the capacity to transport 50,000 daily riders. It will provide seamless access to the airport’s award-winning Terminal A, future Terminal B, parking facilities, and NJ Transit and Amtrak rail links. This project is a critical transportation link that is central to the airport’s ongoing transformation.
Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole emphasized the significance of this project, stating that it is not just about replacing outdated infrastructure, but also about building capacity, reliability, and enhancing the customer experience for the millions of travelers who use Newark Liberty Airport.
Executive Director Rick Cotton also highlighted the importance of the AirTrain in the airport’s future, stating that it will improve access and support the airport’s continued growth. The new AirTrain will also connect the airport’s terminals, rail links, and parking into a modern and unified system.
Governor Phil Murphy expressed his support for the project, stating that Newark Airport is the front door to the region, and modernizing the AirTrain system is part of their commitment to reimagining a world-class airport for the state.
Local mayors also praised the project for its impact on the community and workforce. Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage stated that this project not only strengthens one of the region’s most vital transportation hubs but also creates new opportunities for residents through local hiring and workforce development. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka also highlighted the project’s significance, stating that it will support the city’s growth and provide opportunities for the local workforce.
The new AirTrain Newark will be an elevated system with three new stations serving Terminal A, a future Terminal B, and the Rail Link Station connecting to NJ Transit and Amtrak. It will offer a direct connection and eliminate the 15-minute walk between the AirTrain and Terminal A.
The Port Authority has also implemented initiatives to support workforce development, including a local hiring and training program for the contractor, Doppelmayr. The PA Build, General Maintainers, and Business Capacity programs will also expand opportunities for local firms and residents to work on the project.
The new AirTrain is a key component of the Port Authority’s EWR Vision Plan, a long-term strategy to transform Newark Liberty into a world-class airport. This plan includes the construction of a new international Terminal B, a streamlined roadway and taxiway network, and enhanced multimodal connections.
In addition, the Port Authority plans to pilot the use of autonomous shuttles as a new form of transportation in 2026, building on the successful autonomous vehicle pilots at EWR and JFK airports over the past three years.
