Navi Mumbai Airport: A Gateway to Prosperity and Growth
The long-awaited Navi Mumbai airport was inaugurated on Wednesday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a significant milestone in the development of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. In his speech, the Prime Minister emphasized the airport’s important role in establishing the region as the largest connectivity hub in Asia.
The Navi Mumbai airport, also referred to as the “gateway to developed India,” is expected to connect Maharashtra’s farmers to markets in Europe and West Asia, enabling exports of fruits and fish. This will not only benefit the local farmers but also boost the state’s economy. The inauguration of the airport also marks the end of Mumbai’s decade-long wait for a second airport, bringing the city on par with other global metropolises like London and New York.
The Prime Minister also flagged off the final phase of Mumbai’s third metro line, creating the largest underground rail network in India. Along with this, an integrated common mobility app was launched, offering a single ticketing option for various services. These developments are expected to provide convenience to citizens and further enhance the city’s connectivity.
In his speech, Prime Minister Modi highlighted his government’s commitment to building new airports and making air travel accessible to all. He also noted that India has now become the world’s third-largest domestic aviation market, with Indian airlines continuously expanding and creating job opportunities in the aviation sector. Modi also expressed the government’s plans to make India an aviation hub by the end of the decade.
The Prime Minister emphasized that empowering the poor and middle class is a national priority. He also highlighted the recent next-generation reforms in GST, which have made several goods more affordable and increased the purchasing power of the people. The market data for this Navratri season has shown a significant increase in the sales of scooters, bikes, televisions, refrigerators, and washing machines, setting a record for the number of purchases made.
In his speech, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis acknowledged the efforts of the Prime Minister in fast-tracking the Navi Mumbai airport project. He also stated that the airport is expected to add one percent to the state’s gross domestic product.
The Navi Mumbai airport is being developed as a public-private partnership project between the Adani group and the City and Industrial Development Corporation. The first phase of the project includes one terminal and a single runway with a capacity to handle 20 million passengers per year. Reflecting on the airport’s development, Adani group chairman Gautam Adani expressed his company’s dream to create a world-class gateway that reflects India’s ambition and Mumbai’s energy. He further added that the airport’s construction, completed in a record time of less than 50 months, is a testament to speed, scale, and the spirit of a new Bharat.
The Navi Mumbai airport is expected to ease the congestion in Mumbai and serve as a new economic engine, creating a ripple effect of prosperity that will empower communities across the region.
