DHL Express, a leading international parcel carrier, has recently announced a $90 million investment to expand its capacity and services in the New York City metropolitan area. With this investment, the company aims to meet the long-term growth demands of one of its highest-volume markets in the United States.
The investment includes the acquisition of new facility leases and the implementation of advanced material handling systems and equipment. Additionally, DHL Express will also be offering freighter services to Newark International Airport. This strategic move will enable the company to better serve its customers in the New York City area and ensure faster and more efficient deliveries.
One of the key changes under this project is the relocation of DHL Express’ Manhattan service center to a new, modern facility in Jersey City, New Jersey. This 92,505-square foot site is strategically located only five miles from Lower Manhattan, providing improved accessibility for courier vehicles and upgraded dispatch capabilities. The facility also features on-site charging infrastructure and a smart layout, ensuring the safety of employees while increasing efficiency.
With the addition of new automated sorting systems, DHL’s new facility will have the capacity to process twice as much volume as the previous location. This will significantly boost throughput and efficiency, with the ability to handle 6,000 conveyable pieces per hour, compared to the previous 3,000 pieces per hour.
According to Greg Hewitt, CEO of DHL Express U. S. , “The New York City area is a cornerstone of our U. S. network and a key gateway for international trade. This investment ensures we have the right infrastructure in place to support our customers’ growing needs for years to come.
Apart from the relocation of the Manhattan service center, DHL Express has also expanded its presence in Brooklyn. The company’s Brooklyn service center has moved to a new 70,202-square-foot building, which is almost three times the size of its previous location. This will provide DHL with more room for growth and improved operational flow. The new facility is also equipped with upgraded automation systems, doubling its sort capacity from 1,500 to 3,000 conveyable pieces per hour.
These enhancements are part of a larger plan to strengthen DHL Express’ network across the greater New York City market. This includes integrating facilities in Long Island City, Hauppauge, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. This initiative aims to balance shipment volumes, improve network efficiency and relieve pressure on high-demand locations.
As part of these optimizations, DHL Express’ global hub at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport will now connect directly to Newark Liberty International Airport. This will bring DHL’s aircraft closer to Manhattan’s primary service center in Jersey City, while Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Long Island will continue to connect via JFK Airport. This change is expected to reduce transit times, improve reliability, and further strengthen service performance across the region.
With this significant investment and expansion, DHL Express is well-equipped to meet the growing demands of its customers in the New York
