Delta Air Lines recently announced the potential discontinuation of all flights from Greater Binghamton Airport (BGM) in Broome County, located approximately eight miles north of the small city of Binghamton, New York. This decision came after United Airlines pulled out in 2016 and American in 2017, leaving Delta as the only commercial operator at the airport.
The Announcement
In late 2025, Delta’s decision to cease operations at BGM became public. The airline confirmed that it would end all service on February 14, 2026. However, Delta assured that it would re-accommodate all passengers who had booked flights beyond that date. Mark Heefner, the Commissioner of Aviation for Greater Binghamton Airport, released a statement addressing the news and providing insight into the decision. He explained that air service decisions involve various factors beyond the control of local airports and communities. He also mentioned that the airport was actively discussing options with Delta and working closely with state, local, and federal partners to re-establish passenger service as soon as possible. Additionally, Heefner stated that the airport remained focused on providing reliable and accessible air travel options for the Greater Binghamton region. Currently, Delta operates two daily flights from Binghamton to Detroit and back.
How BGM Hoped To Survive Delta’s Departure
In response to Delta’s initial decision to leave BGM, the small airport faced a significant revenue loss. However, the airport aimed to attract new airlines through the federal funds available for carriers that operate at rural airports. Heefner shared with Binghamton Homepage that he believed there was an opportunity for growth and that in a year or so, there would be better overall air service. He also mentioned that while airlines may not be interested in entering a market with existing commercial service, the chance to be the exclusive operator could be appealing. The airport had also invested in making BGM more attractive, including purchasing a fixed-base operator in 2024 and completing a $54 million renovation with the help of a $6 million grant. Delta’s potential departure also raised concerns for the airport’s employees, including those working for the airline, TSA operatives, rental car companies, and 20 staff hired by the airport.
The Impact Of Removing Passenger Safeguards
In November 2025, the Department of Transportation ended a regulation that required airlines to automatically reimburse passengers for delayed or canceled flights. The rule mandated airlines to provide compensation ranging from $200 to $775, depending on the length of the delay, and cover hotel and meal expenses if the delay or cancellation was the airline’s fault. However, the regulation ended, citing “unnecessary regulatory burdens. ” As a result, passengers must now fill out claim forms and negotiate with customer service for compensation.
