Airports are notorious for long lines and wait times, but recent conditions at airports across the country, particularly New York’s LaGuardia airport, have been exceptionally challenging for travelers. These issues have been exacerbated by the recent government shutdown and a tragic plane collision.
Due to a staffing shortage caused by the partial federal government shutdown, lines at LaGuardia airport have become hours-long, causing frustration and delays for travelers. This was further compounded by the airport’s closure on Monday morning due to a collision between an Air Canada plane and a fire truck on Sunday night.
The lines at LaGuardia were already long on Sunday, with some travelers reporting that the pre-check line for Terminal B had extended into the nearby parking garage. As the day went on, the lines only got worse, with some travelers waiting for over three hours and even missing their flights as a result.
These staffing shortages are a result of the shutdown of the U. S. Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). While some TSA agents are still working without pay, over 400 have quit since mid-February, causing even longer wait times for travelers.
In an attempt to alleviate the issue, ICE agents have been deployed at LaGuardia and other major airports, causing even more chaos and delays for travelers. This decision has been met with criticism, with some calling for President Trump and Congress to end the shutdown and properly fund TSA.
The collision on Sunday night, which resulted in the deaths of the pilot and co-pilot, also led to the hospitalization of 41 passengers and crew members. The airport was closed for several hours and nearly 600 flights were cancelled or rerouted as a result.
Unfortunately, LaGuardia is not the only airport experiencing these issues. Newark Airport had a brief ground stop on Monday morning due to an evacuation of the air traffic control tower, and other major airports such as Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport have also seen long lines and delays.
In light of these challenges, the Atlanta airport has advised travelers to arrive at least four hours early. As for LaGuardia, wait times are subject to change rapidly and the airport has temporarily suspended wait time reporting. Travelers are urged to check with their airline for the most up-to-date flight status.
It is clear that the government shutdown has had a significant impact on airport operations and has caused frustration and inconvenience for travelers. As the situation continues to develop, it is important for travelers to stay informed and allow for extra time when traveling through these affected airports.
