Leahy Burlington International Airport is a significant contributor to the economy of Vermont. A recent economic impact assessment revealed that the airport generates $1. 07 billion in annual economic activity and supports 5,646 jobs statewide. This not only highlights the airport’s role as a key driver of economic growth, but also as a crucial connector for the region.
The assessment, which evaluated the economic contributions of airport operations, visitor spending, military activity, and capital investments, showed a significant increase in key areas since the last assessment in 2018. Labor income has increased by 91%, reaching $325 million annually. State and local tax revenue has also seen a significant increase of 81%, now totaling over $62 million.
Nic Longo, the Director of Aviation at the Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport, emphasized the airport’s importance in connecting Vermont to the national economy. He stated that the airport is not just a transportation hub, but a powerful economic engine that supports job creation, local businesses, and overall growth and opportunity in the region.
The assessment revealed that 3,807 direct jobs are tied to airport operations and activity, including airline employees, airport staff, military personnel, and businesses operating on airport property. An additional 1,869 jobs are supported through indirect and induced economic activity, which includes supply chains and household spending.
Tourism also plays a significant role in the airport’s economic impact. An estimated 353,892 visitors arrive through the airport each year, generating approximately $161. 4 million in regional visitor spending. This supports local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and transportation providers.
The study also highlighted the long-term value of the airport’s infrastructure. The existing facilities, including runways, terminals, and aviation infrastructure, are estimated to be worth $808 million, with a total replacement value of over $1. 4 billion.
Overall, the airport’s economic activity and infrastructure represent a regional asset worth $1. 88 billion, which is an increase of 80% since the last assessment in 2018. The airport’s role as Vermont’s largest transportation hub cannot be overlooked, as it provides crucial connectivity for residents, businesses, and visitors throughout the state and neighboring regions.
Jeff Bartley, the Director of Innovation & Marketing, emphasized the importance of continued investment in connectivity for Vermont’s economic competitiveness. He stated that as commercial travel, electric aviation, and workforce development converge, the airport will continue to advance a future of endless possibilities.
