American Airlines, one of the largest airlines in the world, is making changes to its senior management team in an effort to improve its profitability and compete with other major airlines like United and Delta.

In a letter sent to company officers on Monday, CEO Robert Isom announced four new additions to the team and three departures. The new additions include Heather Garboden as chief customer officer, JC Gulbranson as senior vice president of flight operations, Caroline Clayton as senior vice president of communications and chief marketing officer, and Steve Neuman as senior vice president of government affairs.

Isom acknowledged that there is a gap between where the company is currently and where it could be, and these changes are intended to close that gap. He emphasized the importance of improving the customer experience, reliability of operations, engagement with team members, and overall business results.

The three departing executives are Kevin Brickner, Ron DeFeo, and Nate Gatten. Brickner, who has been with the airline for 30 years, is retiring from his position as senior vice president of technical operations. DeFeo is stepping down as the chief communications officer, and Gatten is leaving his role as executive vice president of American Eagle, corporate real estate, and government affairs.

Chief Commercial Officer Nat Pieper will now have a larger scope of responsibility, including marketing, brand, advertising, and partnerships. Garboden, the new chief customer officer, will report directly to Pieper and will now oversee reservations, contact centers, service recovery, and catering.

Gulbranson will now be responsible for airports and planning, and will also lead American’s integrated operations center under the guidance of Chief Operating Officer David Seymour. Clayton will take over communications, while Neuman will lead government affairs and sustainability efforts.

In addition, Chief Financial Officer Devon May will now handle corporate real estate, and Brandon Kahle will lead regional operations under Seymour’s leadership.

These changes come as Isom faces pressure from investors and employees to improve the company’s profitability. This year, the airline’s unionized flight attendants expressed a vote of no-confidence in Isom after the release of full-year earnings. With these new additions and changes to the team, American Airlines hopes to address these concerns and improve its overall performance.
