Devastating News for Spirit Airlines and its Employees

The recent announcement of Spirit Airlines’ closure has caused a ripple effect in the aviation industry. As expected, other operators are seizing the opportunity to fill the void left by the now-defunct carrier. JetBlue and Breeze have wasted no time in expanding their routes from Fort Lauderdale, Spirit’s top airport. This expansion is just the beginning, with more airlines expected to announce new links in the near future.

JetBlue’s 11 New Routes from Fort Lauderdale

JetBlue has revealed its plan to launch flights to 11 new destinations from Fort Lauderdale. These routes include Barranquilla (starting October 1, with daily flights), Baltimore (starting July 9, with three daily flights), Cali (starting October 15, with daily flights), Charlotte (starting July 9, with three daily flights), Chicago O’Hare (starting June 9, with two daily flights), Columbus (starting November 2, with daily flights), Detroit (starting July 9, with two daily flights), Houston Intercontinental (starting July 9, with three daily flights), Indianapolis (starting November 2, with daily flights), Nashville (starting July 9, with three daily flights), and Ponce (starting July 9, with daily flights). These routes are ambitious, with some of them having high frequencies.

According to Cirium Diio data, Spirit already operated all of these routes except for Ponce this year. Additionally, JetBlue has previously served six of these markets from Fort Lauderdale. These include Baltimore (until 2019), Charlotte (until 2010), Chicago O’Hare (until 2022), Detroit (until 2019), Nashville (until 2024), and Ponce (until 2008). The addition of new destinations, such as Barranquilla, Cali, and Indianapolis, marks JetBlue’s continuous expansion in its network. Furthermore, the return to Baltimore, Charlotte, and Columbus showcases the airline’s efforts to re-establish itself in these cities.

Breeze’s Four New Routes from Atlantic City

Breeze, another fast-growing airline, has also announced four new routes from Atlantic City. These include flights to Fort Myers (starting October 22, with three weekly flights), Orlando (starting May 8, with initially three weekly flights but later daily), Myrtle Beach (starting October 22, with two weekly flights), and West Palm Beach (starting December 17, with three weekly flights). These routes were previously operated by Spirit, which had been the sole scheduled operator in Atlantic City from 2022 to 2024. The addition of these routes will make Breeze the largest airline in Atlantic City, even before its first flight has landed. Its first service is set to begin later this week, on May 6, from Charleston.
