Transponders to be Installed on New York Area Airport Ground Vehicles after Fatal Collision
Following a deadly collision between an Air Canada jet and a Port Authority firetruck at LaGuardia Airport in New York, officials have announced plans to install transponders on ground vehicles at the region’s three major airports. This decision comes after the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) noted the absence of transponders in a preliminary report on the March 22 accident, which claimed the lives of two pilots and injured several others.
The new transponders will be placed on fire trucks and other rescue vehicles, providing air traffic controllers with real-time information on their locations. This technology constantly sends signals to the control tower, improving the precision and accuracy of tracking ground vehicles. The NTSB’s report revealed that the fire truck involved in the collision had driven past red warning lights and was crossing the runway after being cleared by an air traffic controller. The incident occurred during a period of heavy air traffic and an emergency involving another plane.
LaGuardia Airport is one of 35 airports in the United States that have Airport Surface Detection Systems (ASDE-X), which combine radar data with information from transponders on planes and ground vehicles to create a display in the control tower. This system also includes an alarm feature to alert controllers of potential collisions. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recommended the installation of transponders at major airports nationwide and has offered to assist with the cost. Many airports have already followed this guidance.
James Allen, the chief communications officer for the Port Authority, stated that the agency has already made investments in safety technology for its airfield vehicles. This includes systems that track vehicle movements and increase operator awareness across the airfield. In addition to LaGuardia, the Port Authority also operates Kennedy Airport in New York and Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey. Allen acknowledged that transponder technology can add another layer of visibility to existing surface-surveillance systems and has committed to working closely with the NTSB and FAA to ensure safety across their airfield operations.
