Joby Aviation, a California-based company, has recently completed a series of successful electric air taxi demonstration flights in New York City. These flights mark a significant milestone as they are the first time electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft have operated within the city’s heliport network.
According to Joby, these demonstration flights are a major step towards launching commercial, zero-emission urban air mobility services. The week-long campaign featured Joby’s aircraft flying from John F. Kennedy International Airport to multiple Manhattan heliports, including Downtown Skyport and facilities at West 30th Street and East 34th Street. These routes mirror the company’s planned commercial operations, with flights expected to connect Manhattan and JFK in under 10 minutes. This is a significant reduction in travel time compared to the typical two-hour road journey.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees much of the region’s transportation infrastructure, has expressed their support for these demonstration flights. According to officials, they are part of ongoing evaluations into how emerging aviation systems can support future mobility needs. The demonstrations also contribute to a wider research effort focused on safety, environmental impact, and infrastructure readiness.
The campaign has been made possible through partnerships with the New York City Economic Development Corporation, Skyports Infrastructure, and Vertiports by Atlantic. Plans are underway to electrify the city’s heliport network to accommodate eVTOL aircraft, including the installation of charging infrastructure.
Joby’s strategy also includes the acquisition of Blade Air Mobility’s passenger business, providing an established operational base and access to thousands of annual passengers. The company is also collaborating with Delta Air Lines and Uber to integrate air taxi services with existing travel networks.
These demonstrations come as New York has been selected for the federal eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, which aims to accelerate the deployment of advanced air mobility across the US. Joby is actively pursuing regulatory certification and is positioning itself for commercial rollout in the coming years.
