US Airlines Increase Baggage Fees Due to Rising Fuel Prices

In response to soaring jet fuel prices caused by the US-Israeli war in Iran, several major US airlines have announced an increase in baggage fees. Delta, United Airlines, and JetBlue have all recently raised their baggage prices, citing the ongoing conflict as the reason.

Delta, following the lead of United and JetBlue, announced on Tuesday that it would be implementing a new fee structure. The cost of a first and second checked bag on most routes will increase by $10 to $45 and $55, respectively. The cost of a third bag will see an even larger increase, jumping to $200, an additional $50.

According to a Delta spokesperson, these changes are a result of the airline’s ongoing review of pricing and reflect the impact of current global conditions and industry dynamics. It is unclear if these new rates will be permanent, or if they will be reduced once fuel prices decrease after the war in Iran is resolved.

In a press release on Tuesday, Delta acknowledged the challenges that airlines are facing due to the increased cost of jet fuel since the US joined Israel in military strikes on Iran. Iran retaliated by closing the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for transporting oil.

The average price of a gallon of jet fuel in four major air hubs – Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, and New York – has increased from $2. 50 on February 27th, the day before military action began, to $4. 81 on Tuesday, according to Airlines for America.

In addition to rising fuel costs, airlines are also dealing with the added expense of rerouting flights to avoid the conflict zone. Despite these challenges, Delta still expects to report a pre-tax profit of $1 billion for the quarter ending in June. The airline also announced a record-breaking $15. 9 billion in revenue for the March quarter.

Delta’s CEO, Ed Bastian, attributes the airline’s success to its strong brand and financial foundation. However, Bastian did not address the decision to increase baggage fees, which has also been seen from other major airlines in recent days.

On April 3rd, United raised the cost of first and second checked bags by $10 on most routes. Similarly, JetBlue has also increased its baggage fees, citing rising fuel costs as the reason. Both airlines state that these changes are necessary, although they recognize that fee increases are never ideal.

In addition to baggage fees, many airlines have also raised ticket prices to offset the rising cost of fuel. Major international carriers such as Qantas, Cathay Pacific, and Thai Airways have imposed fuel surcharges, while British Airways is reportedly offering financial incentives to pilots who reduce their aircraft’s fuel consumption.

Despite the challenges presented by the US-Israeli war in Iran and the resulting increase in fuel prices, Delta remains confident in its financial stability and ability to provide top-quality service to its customers.
