The Importance of a Young Fleet for Airlines

Having a young fleet is crucial for airlines as it leads to lower operating costs, reduced emissions, and an improved inflight experience for passengers. This is why we will be taking a closer look at STARLUX, the Taiwanese airline with the world’s youngest fleet, and how it has quickly become one of the top airlines in the world.

A Look at STARLUX’s Fleet

According to ch-aviation’s Youngest Aircraft Fleet Award 2025, STARLUX Airlines has the youngest fleet in the world with an average age of just 3. 2 years. The airline currently operates 28 Airbus aircraft with an additional 40 on order. The first aircraft delivered to the fleet was an A321neo (B-58201) in October 2019, with the oldest aircraft being 6. 1 years old and the newest being just three years old.

The airline’s fleet consists of 13 A321neos, 5 A330-900neos, and 10 A350-900s. The A321neos have an average age of 4. 2 years and feature 188 seats divided between business class and economy class. The A330-900neos have an average age of 3. 2 years and seat 297 passengers in business and economy class. The A350-900s have an average age of 1. 8 years and offer four cabin classes: first, business, premium economy, and economy.

STARLUX’s Plans for Expansion

The airline has big plans for expansion, with orders for 18 A350-1000s and 10 A350 Freighters. However, due to delivery delays at Airbus, STARLUX will only receive five aircraft by the end of 2025, instead of the expected nine. This has resulted in a reduced capacity growth of 20-30% instead of the planned 50%.

STARLUX’s CEO, Glenn Chai, has stated that the A350-1000 is the perfect fit for the airline’s strategy to optimize long-haul operations while providing an exceptional passenger experience. The airline is also planning to open a secondary base at Kaohsiung International Airport next year and has announced future routes to Phoenix, New York, Washington, Chicago, Dallas, and Houston.

STARLUX’s Success and Recognitions

Despite being only a few years old, STARLUX has quickly established itself as one of the best airlines in the world. In June 2025, Skytrax awarded the airline with a five-star rating based on a comprehensive audit of both the airport and onboard experience. The airline also received the World’s Most Improved Airline award from Skytrax.

In addition to the five-star recognition from Skytrax, STARLUX has also received the APEX Five-Star Global Airline designation for 2025 and 2026.
