American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are two of the largest carriers in the United States, leading in passenger numbers and fleet size. While they primarily operate out of different airports, both airlines have recently expanded into each other’s territory, creating increased competition on key transcontinental routes.

New Transcontinental Route for Delta Air Lines

Delta Air Lines has announced plans to launch a new non-stop route from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) in May 2026. This will put them in direct competition with American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, who already serve this route.

This move is part of Delta’s strategy to strengthen their domestic network and expand beyond their traditional strongholds on the West Coast. By offering more transcontinental flight options, they hope to increase competition and put pressure on fares and schedules.

American Airlines, a major carrier at Philadelphia International Airport, is likely to be affected by this news as they currently operate two daily flights between Seattle-Tacoma and Philadelphia, using the Boeing 737 MAX 8 and Airbus A321neo. Delta will also be using their Airbus A321neos on this route. Their fleet currently consists of 84 A321neos, with 71 more on order as part of their overall fleet growth and modernization plan.

American Airlines Upgrades Service to Salt Lake City

In response to Delta’s new route, American Airlines has upgraded their seasonal service between Philadelphia International Airport and Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) to a year-round operation. They will operate one daily flight with their Airbus A321s, while Delta will continue to serve the route twice daily with their A321s.

American Airlines has a slightly larger mainline fleet of over 1,000 aircraft, with more on order compared to Delta’s fleet of just over 900. They recently announced four new routes from their hubs at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) and Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), to be operated by their regional subsidiary, American Eagle.

American Airlines Returns to Israel

American Airlines plans to resume their daily flights between New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) starting in March 2026. This will put them in competition with Delta, as well as El Al, Arkia, and United Airlines, who will offer up to three daily flights from their hub at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

In 2024, JFK was the fifth-busiest international destination and sixth-busiest overall from Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport, with over 529,000 passengers across all carriers.

Delta Air Lines has been steadily growing their presence at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, transforming it into a key West Coast hub. This move is part of their strategy to challenge Alaska Airlines’ dominance in the Pacific Northwest.
