American Airlines: The World’s Largest Airline with Ten Hubs Across the United States
Founded in 1936, American Airlines is one of the world’s largest carriers and holds the title of the largest airline by the number of hubs served. With its headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas, American Airlines operates ten hubs across the United States, which is more than any other major airline.
The airline’s mainline fleet, American Airlines, is supported by its regional carrier, American Eagle, which provides regional and some domestic/trans-border services. With over 1,000 aircraft in its fleet, American Airlines offered more than 275 million seats in 2024, which is equivalent to almost three quarters of the US population. The airline flew more than 2. 1 million flights last year, covering enough miles to go around the Earth almost 74,000 times.
American Airlines has a vast international reach, primarily through its oneworld partners. The airline has codeshare and joint venture agreements with airlines such as Aer Lingus, Alaska Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Fiji Airways, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Royal Air Maroc, among others. It has recently partnered with Porter Airlines to offer more flights to and from Canada.
The airline’s fleet is the second-largest in the world and consists of Boeing and Airbus narrowbody aircraft, as well as an all-Boeing widebody fleet. American Airlines has also placed an order for 20 Boom Overture supersonic aircraft, with options for 40 more. The average age of its fleet is around 14 years, and the carrier operates four maintenance bases across the country to maintain its vast fleet, including Tulsa, Pittsburgh, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Charlotte Douglas.
Let’s take a closer look at American Airlines’ ten hubs scattered across the US.
Northeastern Hubs
American Airlines has a significant presence in the Northeastern region, with three hubs located in New York and Philadelphia. American Airlines is the third-largest carrier at JFK, operating around 12% of all flights at the airport. Its top three international destinations from JFK are London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, and Rome Fiumicino Airport. At LaGuardia, American Airlines holds around 21% of the market share and is present on all top ten domestic routes, including Orlando, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Boston, Charlotte, Miami, Denver, Los Angeles, and Phoenix.
Philadelphia is a popular gateway for American Airlines in the Northeast, and it is the fifth-largest hub for the carrier. It has a dominant presence at the airport, operating around 46% of all flights.
