Flight Disruption at Manchester Airport Expected as Cabin Crew Workers Prepare to Strike

Manchester Airport is set to experience flight disruption later this month as over 100 cabin crew workers from Aer Lingus have voted to go on strike. This comes after the members of Unite, the union representing these workers, rejected a pay rise offer of nine percent this year and three percent the next year.

Aer Lingus is a major airline that operates out of Terminal 2 at Manchester Airport, with daily flights to popular destinations such as Dublin, Boston, and Barbados. However, with 130 cabin crew workers voting for industrial action, flights during the strike period, from October 30th to November 2nd, are expected to be affected.

In a statement, Unite regional officer John O’Neill expressed that while the strike may cause concern for those with travel plans during this period, the members felt they had no other option. He also urged the airline to return to the negotiating table to resolve the dispute, instead of using tactics to undermine the union.

Meanwhile, Aer Lingus has expressed disappointment with the outcome of the ballot and stated that they had negotiated in good faith with Unite, taking into consideration market pay standards in the UK. The airline had even reached two separate pay agreements with Unite, which were then recommended to the members. However, the union’s decision to go ahead with the strike has caused frustration for the airline, as it will greatly impact customers traveling between Manchester and popular destinations like New York, Orlando, and Barbados.

Aer Lingus has assured that they will be in direct communication with affected customers, offering alternative arrangements where possible to minimize the disruption caused by the strike. The airline hopes to resolve the matter and resume normal operations as soon as possible.
