Transforming T. F.

T. F. Green International Airport, located in Rhode Island, has experienced a remarkable transformation in recent years, becoming the fastest-growing airport in the United States. This change is the result of strategic growth, smart investments, and a passenger-first focus, led by CEO Iftikhar Ahmad.

From Loss to Growth

For a decade, from the mid-2000s to 2016, T. F. Green International Airport saw a decline in passengers and destinations. However, according to the U. S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) data, the airport has more than doubled its route map since 2016 and has been growing faster than other New England airports for the last 18 months.

Passenger Satisfaction and Recognition

The airport’s efforts have not gone unnoticed, as it has received numerous accolades, including being named the most liked airport by passengers in Travel + Leisure’s annual survey in July 2025. The Washington Post also recognized T. F. Green International Airport as one of the top 10 best airports in the U. S. in June. Additionally, the airport has received 16 international awards since 2017, including being named in the top 10 by Condé Nast Traveler in 2023. It has also received four credit rating upgrades from Fitch and Standard & Poor’s in the last two years.

Strategic Growth and New Routes

T. F. Green International Airport has more than doubled its route map since 2016, with the addition of new non-stop routes, such as JetBlue’s daily service to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and New York’s JFK Airport. Southwest Airlines has also launched daily service to Nashville, Tennessee, and Breeze Airways has added two new routes to Daytona Beach, Florida, and Wilmington, North Carolina. The airport now offers a total of 38 non-stop destinations, including seasonal non-stop service to Los Angeles, California (LAX), and same-plane service to seven additional destinations.

Future Plans for Growth

Breeze Airways has selected T. F. Green International Airport as one of its largest hubs, with plans to add international flights once it receives its FAA certification to fly transatlantic. This move is expected to redefine the airport’s role within the Northeast air corridor and further drive growth.

Marketing and Passenger Experience

The Rhode Island Commerce and Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC) have collaborated on campaigns to reintroduce the airport as a user-friendly, modern airport with a strong emphasis on local culture, convenience, and new connectivity. These efforts have helped balance the point-of-sale and directionality associated with flights, with Boston traffic and tunnel congestion playing a significant role in passengers choosing T. F. Green International Airport over other options.
